Stats
Ranged Weapons have a few stats defining how they behave, and unlike Melee Weapons these aren't significantly affected by character stats.
Rules
Range
Decides if you can attack an enemy, and if you deal full or double damage. Here are the cases and their effect:
Melee range
Most Ranged Weapons cannot be used in Melee Combat, but the Weapon Special Property Point-Blank can give exception. Damage is doubled, same as Close range.
Close range
If the enemy is within close range you can attack them and deal double damage.
You are also close enough that the target could run and attack you within a single round of combat and thus put you in melee, most likely preventing you from shooting again.
Long range
If the enemy is within long range you can attack them and deal normal damage.
You are far enough away that an enemy can't charge you without you getting a chance to flee.
Out of range
If the enemy is further away than Long range you won't deal damage, unless the weapon has Extended range.
Damage
The normal damage dealt by the weapon, the actual damage depends on the range.
Special properties
Some weapons don't behave normally, this is documented in the list of special properties for that weapon.
Single-Use
This weapon isn't adjusted for reloading in combat, it is only usable one Combat round per combat. Applied for example to firearms without a magazine.
Point-Blank
This weapon can be used in Melee Combat. Generally given to small firearms or firearms clearly built for it.
Extended range
This weapon is possible to use even further away than Long range, requirements for this and the resulting damage is decided on a case-by-case basis.
